Sketch of the Effigy

Comments:

In the summer of 2006 I visited this site as well as a number of others in the area. The scenery is breathtaking as well as dry as a bone.

Turtle Butte has a figure of a turtle on it and it is made up of boulders, placed side by side to form the figure of a turtle. This is on the north side of the Big Muddy Lake, about 8 miles west of the village of Minton.

The effigy itself is over 120 feet long. We drove past it a number of times looking for it on the north side of the road, when in fact it was on the south near a gas plant. The tours out of Cornach also visit this site. The outline of the turtle is marked out with chalk and stakes to make it easier to find as much of the boulders other than the central cairn is hidden by the grass.
