While over the past few years I have taken care to visit and
document some of the Medicine Wheels that are found in Alberta
and Saskatchewan, there is one more famous Medicine Wheel on a
Mountaintop in Wyoming that I had yet to visit,.... until recently.
On June 23, 2008 my wife Grace and I had the pleasure of visiting
it. The following photos were taken that day and are a record
of our visit.

Most books and websites on Medicine Wheels talk about 3 or 4 main
Medicine wheels on the western North American Plains. The Majorville
Alberta one is the largest and the oldest. This one is both the
highest and the most southerly. Its said to be only a few
thousand years old |
It's a 2 mile hike from the parking lot. At this time some of the
trail is covered in snow so we had to walk carefully. Also at over
9,000 feet above sea level, any large amount of physical exertion
is a challenge. After a long walk we arrived here:
|
So the trail curves around to the North West where it then approaches the Wheel. Every Medicine Wheel has a
direction to approach from, this time it was from that direction. Of course you are asked to walk left. another unwritten rule about
these sites.
|
The circle and 'spokes' are clearly marked out as shown here. Around the
cicle offerings have been left both inside and the the ropes
|
A similar picture from another angle.
|
This is at the 'south' point on the circle.
|
Here Grace left this offering, tied to the rope.
|
Lots of interesting views as you walk aroung the wheel.
|
The cliffs to the south were also interesting to visit. Special
offerings were left there as well.
|
The whole ridge top was convered in the most colourful display of flowers.
|
And on our way back to our vehicle we spotted a rainbow that ended over the parking lot. How neat is that!
